La Corona di Alloro per la Laurea is presented to each scholarship recipient.
The bay laurel leaf has been a symbol of triumph and victory. The word "laureate", "poet laureate" refers to the laurel leaf. Dating back to the renaissance period, the poet Dante can be often seen as wearing the laurel wreath on his head.
The poet Petrarca also wore the laurel wreath and it is often said by scholars that his inspirational muse, "Laura" could have been the "laurea" as he self-proclaimed his own writings as a scholarly and triumphant poet.
In Italy the wreath is given to a student earning his/her University degree. The terms "laureato and laureata" refers to any student who has graduated. The tradition originated at the University of Padova and has spread to all Italian universities over the last two centuries.
